Prevention Special Interest Group
The Prevention SIG covers all aspects of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of eating disorders, including health promotion, with aims to:
- Create a network of professionals interested in the field of preventing eating disorders
- Keep up to date with current developments in the prevention of eating disorders
- Share information, resources and ideas about the prevention of eating disorders
- Look at ways of promoting the work of the Prevention SIG group in order to have greater representation at the annual conferences
- Promote the importance of working together across the entire continuum of care from promotion, to prevention, to early intervention, to basic and specialized treatment
- Monitor international, national and local trends in eating disorders related to health promotion and prevention activities
- Identify, develop, provide and evaluate educational material and resources focusing on eating disorder-related health promotion and prevention
Future Goals and Planned Activities
- Meet annually at future AED International Conferences and meetings
- Create a link via email to further discussions on the focus and the projects of the group
- Be active in promoting the interest of prevention among AED members
- Raise the profile of eating disorder prevention research and programming as fundamental to a comprehensive approach to service delivery
- Develop or adopt “best practice: guidelines around eating disorder prevention efforts
Past Activities and History
The Prevention SIG met in Boston with 20 participants. During the meeting, we had interesting discussions on the following topics:
- How to share information, resources and ideas about the prevention of eating disorders
- How to look at ways of promoting the work of the Prevention SIG group in order to have greater representation at the annual conferences and in the academy newsletter
- How to Identify, develop, provide and evaluate educational material and resources focusing on eating disorder-related health promotion and prevention.
