Nutrition Special Interest Group
The members of this SIG are seeking growth and education in application of nutrition expertise to eating disordered individuals. Availability of educational programs sufficiently challenging for nutrition professionals who are not new to this field is very limited. We count on AED for advanced training and cutting-edge thinking.
In addition, this SIG functions as a source of support, consultation and collaboration for its members by addressing clinical dilemmas, sharing referral and resource information and promoting scholarly presentations at both eating disorder and general dietetic conferences. While the majority of the SIG members are dietitians, this SIG is open to all health care professionals and we encourage a multidisciplinary association.
Future Goals and Planned Activities
-
Educate clinicians and researchers about the integral role of nutrition therapy in the treatment of eating disorders
-
Provide a forum through our listserv for members to discuss clinical and empirical issues related to nutrition, and to promote the sharing of information and resources among professionals
-
Increase awareness and activism within AED, SCAN (an American Dietetic Association practice group for eating disorders) and our respective communities
-
Develop more education and teaching days focused on nutrition and the treatment of eating disorders
Nutrition Listserv: The Nutrition SIG has its own listserv through AED. In order to log onto the listserv you will need to log in to the Members Only area of the AED Web site. Click on AED Listserv and then click on Options at the top of the AED Listserv page. Click on My Mailing Lists and check the Nutrition SIG listserv.
Change of Leadership: The Nutrition SIG Chairs for 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 are Erica Goldstein, MS, RD, CDN, from New York and Jillian Croll, PhD, RD, LD, MPH, from Minnesota. New Chairs are selected every two years at the AED Conference.
Future Events: We are planning a Nutrition SIG Training Day which will be open to dietitians, as well as other health care providers. We are working with SCAN, the Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Dietetic Practice Group to possibly co-sponsor this type of training day. The goal of the Training Day will be to provide training for entry-level and advanced eating disorder dietitians and other health professionals in nutrition assessment techniques, counseling skills and approaches, and multidisciplinary team roles and responsibilities as they apply to working with individuals struggling with eating disorders.
